There are markets for both Charles and William to become king by 2025. The prices for which you can see, above. 

However, there is a small print involved in these next King of England odds that you should be aware of. That is that wagers will only be paid out if Charles or William (or both) are coronated by January 1, 2025.

The word “coronation” essentially means that a monarch undergoes the official ceremony of being crowned. It’s just a fancy, schmancy way of putting it.

Anyway, here’s how it works.

Charles will rule as King as soon as the Queen dies and be recognized by The Accession Council as the ruler. However, to have the odds for Prince Charles paid out, he must be formally crowned before that date.

So, back to the guessing game. As, well, this is pretty much a guessing game, right? When will Elizabeth II pass away? 

There is no way of predicting the exact date someone dies. But you can infer that, at 95, the reigning monarch should not have much time left. Plans have already been made for the day she passes, which reportedly includes Charles potentially being coronated on the day after she dies. 

Although predicting the deaths of anyone feels a little macabre, it’s difficult to imagine that Lizzy has much more time left.

I mean, 95 is an incredible inning for anyone. And even with her opulence, exceptional food quality, and elite healthcare, there is only so long the human body can keep going. 

For that reason, it seems unlikely that the reigning monarch will live much longer and the value is good here.

Is there a chance that both Prince Charles and Prince William could be crowned as King of England before 2025?

Not at the same time, of course. There is only one monarch allowed to rule at any given time in Britain, so for that to happen would involve some major changes to the current system. 

Of course, there are a few plausible scenarios where Charles and William could both ascend to the throne, in successive reigns, before the wager cut-off date. 

• Charles Dies Before 2025 as King 
• Charles Voluntarily Abdicates the Throne 
• Charles is Removed from the Throne

It’s unlikely that Charles will not see out his term as king. 

His term, of course, depends on how long he lives. And although 72 is getting on by most regular people’s standards, it’s not old for the British royals. 

Even if he inherited the crown tomorrow, the chances of Prince Charles dying in an accident, or by way of a random illness, are slim. So, we can expect him to be the ruler of his British subjects for a fair amount of time. 

As ridiculous as it sounds to even have monarchies in the days where science is god for many, that could be something on the agenda.

Still, it’s unlikely to happen. The odds stink, too, so I’ll pass.

The likeliest scenario here is Prince William not being coronated as King by 2025. But again, the odds are too poor for most to consider.

He wouldn’t back this himself, would he?

Could Charles abdicate for William to take his place as King? It’s not out of the question. However, it is highly unlikely that he would choose to do so straight away. 

Remember, old Charlie takes the reigns as ruler as soon as the Queen of England dies. It’s an automatic process, regardless of if he is crowned or not.

The last abdication of the throne happened in 1936 when King Edward VIII chose to marry a divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. In short, the royal family and the Church of England were massively against it, and he buckled. In the process, he surrendered the throne.

In football terms, he left by “mutual consent.” But it was shocking, given that it marked the first time the throne had ever been given up willingly. Or should I say, “willingly?” 

Before then, we had the likes of Richard II of England, James II of England and VII of Scotland, and Mary, Queen of Scots, abdicating for various reasons. But never in the way that Eddie the rascal did.

The title of the Crown depends upon the statute, which falls under the Act of Settlement 1701. This means that any royal abdication must be pushed through in an act of Parliament.

The terms of the Statute of Westminster 1931 worked towards making it legal, for want of a better term, to push through the abdication of Edward VIII from his throne. This was finalized when His Majesty’s Declaration of Abdication Act passed in 1936.

Even if Charles did want to abdicate, it would be a major pain in the goolies.

Who knows when she’ll go? It could be today. It could be in ten years. The fact of the matter is that we really have no idea.
