MS players can gamble at online casinos through offshore options. These online casinos offer a bigger variety of games than the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos are able to.

Poker rooms are fully legal in Mississippi at the state’s casinos.

Sports betting is largely legal in Mississippi. The state passed HV 967(2) — AKA the Fantasy Sports Act — in 2017, which legalized daily fantasy sports (DFS) betting.

As of January 2024, mobile sports betting is permitted in Mississippi, but only when the player is physically located on the grounds of the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos. That could change in the near future, however, as the MS Legislature created the Mobile Online Sports Betting Task Force(3) to explore expanded mobile sports betting.

While there aren’t any licensed horse racing tracks in the Magnolia State, players can still place pari-mutuel wagers on horse races at in-person sportsbooks.

Mississippi also has an official state lottery that was created by the Alyce G. Clarke Mississippi Lottery Law(4) of 2018.

Charitable bingo games are allowed under Mississippi law. The games must benefit licensed not-for-profit organizations. The total prizes for single bingo games can’t exceed $7,500 and are capped at $15,000 per day.

The lottery is regulated by the Mississippi Lottery Corporation, which was established in 2018 after the passing of the Alyce G. Clarke Mississippi Lottery law.

The first $80 million generated annually by the lottery is allocated to infrastructure-related initiatives that include repairing and maintaining the state’s highways and bridges. All proceeds exceeding $80 million are earmarked for the Mississippi Education Enhancement Fund.

As of January 2024, the Mississippi Lottery has grossed over $2 billion since November of 2019.

As of January 2024, the only gambling-related legislation in Mississippi revolves around Rep. Casey Eure’s intention to legalize fully mobile sports betting during the 2024 session. As it stands, mobile sports betting can only be performed when the player is physically located in one of MS’s in-person casinos. Some of the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos oppose the legislation because they say their casinos can’t compete with the large operating budgets of online sportsbooks.

That said, the state could potentially loosen its mobile sports wagering laws in the near future. In March of 2023 the Mobile Online Sports Betting Task Force was created to explore expanding mobile sports betting in Mississippi. One of the task force’s initiatives is to study how to minimize the potential negative impacts that expanded mobile sports betting could have on the state’s existing in-person casinos.
