  • Oppenheimer’s Best Picture odds are -1600 at BetOnline, but that’s not something you should consider.
  • Christopher Nolan has yet to win Best Picture for previous films, including Inception and Dunkirk.
  • Could the lack of Japan’s perspective rub The Academy the wrong way, giving another film a chance?

Oppenheimer’s Best Picture odds have the film as an overwhelming 2024 Oscars favorite. Although it does have a very high chance of winning the award, it’s certainly not guaranteed. When placing your wagers, it’s important to acknowledge the real chance it wins, in addition to the betting value.

Oppenheimer’s odds have hardly any return on investment, and the following reasons indicate that another film could end up winning anyways.

Odds for Oppenheimer to Win Best Picture

Christopher Nolan’s biographical film about J. Robert Oppenheimer was an instant classic. It received raving reviews and is now approaching the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office and has made over $329 million domestically.

The film has won an enormous amount of awards already, including Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globes and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

With such high praise, it’s no wonder that Oppenheimer’s Best Picture odds are priced the way they are. The film featured tons of A-List actors and actresses, such as Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and so much more.

When you look at the Oscars odds across the top entertainment betting sites, you’ll see that many of them have Oppenheimer to win Best Picture at -5000 odds and below. If you’re seriously considering betting on this to happen, it makes more sense to do so at BetOnline.

Why Oppenheimer Won’t Win Best Picture

There are several different reasons why Oppenheimer might not win the Best Picture award at the 2024 Oscars. That’s not to say that it’s not deserving, because it absolutely is. It’s more about recognizing that it’s not a guarantee.

The following reasons could be why Oppenheimer doesn’t win Best Picture at the Oscars:

The Oscars Don’t Always Do the Right Thing

Even if you think Oppenheimer should win the award, you can’t put all of your faith in the Oscars. The Academy Awards are not a mistake-free organization. In fact, they’ve made so many questionable decisions throughout the years that it’s hard to remember them all at once.

You can even take a look at the 2024 Oscars snubs and see that they have already made some mistakes.

Oppenheimer’s Best Picture odds are -1600 at BetOnline, which means it has about a 94.12% chance to win. Some sites have them down to -8000, which translates to a 98.77% chance.

No matter which odds you use, they aren’t 100%, and there’s a reason for that. The Oscars have been known to make some mistakes, and they very well could give the award to another film, even though Oppenheimer is the one that arguably deserves it most.

Christopher Nolan’s Best Picture Struggles

Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan is regarded as one of the best directors in the history of the film industry.

He’s produced so many incredible movies, from Oppenheimer, to Interstellar, to Dunkirk, and more. His most recent film could have the best chance to win than any of his previous ones.

However, Nolan’s struggles in this category are well-documented. The Academy has nominated Inception and Dunkirk for Best Picture in the past, only for them both to lose to The King’s Speech and The Shape of Water, respectively.

Other awards ceremonies have been reluctant to give Nolan’s projects awards in the past, whether it’s the Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and others.

Do the Oscars have something against Nolan? It’s unlikely that they do, but it’s still noteworthy that he’s had so many great movies that haven’t won the award before.

Oppenheimer’s Performance at Other Awards Shows

Not only have Christopher Nolan’s movies struggled to win big awards in the past, but it’s not like Oppenheimer is sweeping the competition. It did win Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globes and a few others, but other movies have stolen the spotlight elsewhere.

For example, the National Society of Film Critics gave it third place for Best Film, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association gave it second place as well. These other associations aren’t on the same level as the Oscars, but it’s still interesting that Oppenheimer didn’t win.

Oppenheimer Lacks Japan’s Perspective

There’s no doubting the brilliance of Christopher Nolan and this movie overall. However, some people might feel like there was something missing. Of course, J. Robert Oppenheimer was known for his major role in the invention of the atomic bomb.

The invention led to the catastrophic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These Japanese cities withstood horrifying atrocities, which killed somewhere between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of them civilians.

There is a part in the movie where Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, is feeling the effects of the aftermath. However, these horrors are not put on full display, and we don’t get Japan’s perspective from it all.

If the Oscars think that this is a missed opportunity, perhaps they will give the award to someone else.

Other Best Picture Bets to Consider in 2024

Oppenheimer’s Best Picture odds are hardly appealing at their current price. You’d have to spend hundreds of dollars just to win back the cost of a candy bar or two. That’s not as exciting as predicting another nominee to win, such as the above three.

To put things into perspective, a $100 bet on Killers of the Flower Moon to win Best Picture will net you $5,000. The same amount will win you $6.25 when using the best available odds from BetOnline.

As we’ve discussed, there’s a non-zero percent chance another nominee wins. With so much up in the air, it makes more sense to bet on another contender.

Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Past Lives are three that stand out to me. You can even bet on The Zone of Interest, The Holdovers, Barbie, or any other nominee as you see fit.

Out of my top three, Killers of the Flower Moon (+5000) stands out the most to me. Martin Scorsese’s film featured iconic performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and more.

This movie received ten nominations at the Oscars, and has performed well at other ceremonies.

Head over to BetOnline to place your bets on this nominee at +5000.

Betting on Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars

Oppenheimer

In the end, Oppenheimer still has a very high chance to win Best Picture at the Oscars this year.

It would not be a surprise if it ended up winning, but as bettors, we must see it from all angles. There are reasons why it might not win, even if it’s an incredible movie on any scale.

The Oscars themselves don’t always make the right decisions. We’ve seen them give major awards away to certain nominees when others were more deserving.

Oppenheimer’s Best Picture odds are simply too far gone to bet on right now. It makes more sense to bet on another nominee like Killers of the Flower Moon, especially when Oppenheimer is not guaranteed to win.

Not only can you bet on the Best Picture award, but you can bet on just about everything at the top Oscars betting sites.
