Why is Patrick Mahomes the SB 59 MVP Favorite?

Patrick Mahomes has won back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs. The Chiefs’ quarterback is the +100 favorite to win the award in this Super Bowl 59 prop market. Mahomes was the favorite last year, too, but Jalen Hurts was the odds-on favorite when these teams faced each other in Super Bowl 57.
Mahomes does not have the stats of an MVP, but it is clear that he is the driving force for the Chiefs dynasty. He typically steps up his game in the Super Bowl, and Mahomes must be at his best to beat the Eagles’ top-ranked defense.
All but one Big Game MVP awards have gone to a member of the winning team. The good news for Mahomes is that the Chiefs are the favorites in Super Bowl 59. Mahomes has averaged the following in his three previous Super Bowl MVP campaigns:
- 267 passing YPG
- 2.33 passing TDs per game
- 1 interceptions per game
- 70.4% completion percentage
Mahomes has led KC to three Lombardis in his tenure and has won the MVP of the Super Bowl each time. If Mahomes wins the Super Bowl MVP again this year, he will break a tie with Joe Montana for the second-most in NFL history.
Top 2025 Super Bowl MVP Contenders
The only thing standing between the Chiefs and a three-peat is the Philadelphia Eagles. KC beat Philly two years ago, but the Eagles have added stars on both sides of the ball since that loss.
One of those stars is Saquon Barkley, who has the second-best Super Bowl 59 MVP odds. Barkley is followed closely by his quarterback, Jalen Hurts (+360).
Saquon Barkley (+275)
John Mara, the owner of the New York Giants, has not slept well in the months since Saquon Barkley signed with Philadelphia. Mara may never know a moment of peace again if Barkley leads the Eagles to a Lombardi in his first season with the Gaint’s divisional rival.
Barkley has the second-best odds to win Super Bowl MVP at +275. The talented running back earned First-Team All-Pro honors after becoming just the ninth player in NFL history to run for 2,000 yards in the regular season. It’s pretty arguable he should be in the running for league MVP as well.
He has continued his outstanding play in the postseason, racking up 442 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 66 carries in three games.
The Eagles set out to prove that teams can still win championships by running the ball. The outcome remains to be seen, but Barkley has done his part to get Philly to the Super Bowl.
Philadelphia needs Barkley to have another great day on the ground for the Eagles to have a chance at dethroning the Chiefs. However, Barkley suffered a calf injury in the Eagles’ NFC title game win. Also, KC has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in their last 18 post-season games.
Jalen Hurts (+360)
Jalen Hurts was the betting favorite for Super Bowl 57 MVP and may have won the award if Philly had not squandered a 24-14 halftime lead. Hurts has the third-best 2025 Super Bowl MVP odds at +360.
Playing quarterback should give Hurts an advantage in Super Bowl MVP voting over most of his other teammates. Outplaying Barkley will be challenging, but Hurts should have plenty of passing opportunities if KC loads the box to stop the run.
Hurts can use all the help he can get in the passing game, as he has posted several lackluster stat lines lately. His 246 passing yards in the NFC Championship Game were the first time he threw for more than 200 yards since Week 15.
On the bright side, the patented Tush Push should help Hurts find the endzone once or twice on Super Bowl Sunday. Vulturing touchdowns from Barkley will hurt the running back’s MVP case while simultaneously strengthening Hurts’s claim for the award.
2025 Super Bowl MVP Sleepers

No defender has won Super Bowl MVP since Von Miller claimed the title in Super Bowl 50. KC and Philly have All-Pro defenders who could claim the honor this year.
Chris Jones (+4000) has been the foundation of the Chiefs championship-caliber defense for years. He will be a big part of stopping Saquon Barkley, and a stand-out performance could net him the MVP.
For Philly, the best defensive Super Bowl MVP candidate is Zack Baun. The linebacker has gone from an under-the-radar free agent signing to a First-Team All-Pro in his first season with the Eagles.
Baun is my top Super Bowl 59 MVP bet, and he must have a big day if the Eagles are going to upset the Chiefs. Stifling KC is easier said than done, but Baun did have the third-most solo tackles (82) this season and will be key to stopping Travis Kelce. If Philly’s defense smothers the Chiefs, Baun could win MVP, similar to Malcolm Smith in Super Bowl 48.
Super Bowl MVP Betting Tips
Quarterbacks have the advantage in Super Bowl MVP voting, but they do not have the same hold on this award as its regular-season counterpart. Since Super Bowl 48, four non-quarterbacks have taken home MVP honors.
In fact, Saquon Barkley has the best odds of any Philly player to win MVP. He would be the first running back to win the award since Terrell Davis in Super Bowl 32. Barkley would also be the first Penn State player to be named Super MVP since Franco Harris won the award in Super Bowl 9.
Tight ends, on the other hand, have never won the award. So even a star like Travis Kelce is unlikely to win Super Bowl MVP.
Ultimately, this game and the MVP voting will likely come down to Mahomes vs. Barkley. If you believe in the three-peat, go with Mahomes. Fans betting on an Eagles upset, though, should wager on Saquon to win MVP.
Super Bowl 59 MVP Winner Prediction
- Patrick Mahomes (+100) – Bet Now
The Big Game matchup is set and now is a great time to wager on the updated Super Bowl MVP odds. Here is my prediction for the winner of the MVP award for Super Bowl 59.
Mahomes has won the Big Game MVP in back-to-back years, and the Chiefs look unstoppable. By hook, crook, or bad officiating, Kansas City will become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. Unlike the Eagles, the Chiefs’ offense flows through their QB, so Mahomes will be the MVP.
You should bet on Mahomes quickly, while you can still get even money odds. His MVP odds will shorten as the Big Game gets closer to kickoff. Create your BetOnline account today to place your bets on Mahomes to be Super Bowl 59 MVP.
